Message Alert on n95 has mysteriously stopped!?!

I have a strange problem with my N95. Without warning my phone has stopped notifying me of new messages. No beep (and yes I HAVE checked that there is a tone set!) and no envelope icon. I also am receiving NO delivery reports.

I backed up my phone data and then did a soft reset with no luck. Then did a hard reset and this time it worked for a few minutes but then back to the same problem again - no alerts for messages, no delivery reports.

I'm only on firmware version 12 but haven't upgraded firmware yet (because I've heard it causes problems for some branded phones. I'm with O2 Ireland - so chances are there will be compatibility issues. they don't even support video calls yet)

Any help would be appreciated - the only way I know if new messages are in or if messages are delivered is by checking regularly. I use SMS quite A LOT at work and off work so this is a major headache

Re: Message Alert on n95 has mysteriously stopped!?!

I h ave not seen this problem occur on the N95 yet, but if you say you did a hard reset and that worked for a while would suggest to me that its a fault with the firmware somewhere that gradually breaks down.
A software upgrade would be the best solution, i know its not what you really want to do, but it will probably fix your problem.

Re: Message Alert on n95 has mysteriously stopped!?!

Are you sure video calling is not supported by O2 because I know it definitely works on Vodafone Ireland. For video calling to work you need the phone at both ends to be compatible and connected via 3g. It works great on Vodafone and guess what? It costs the same as a normal call.

Regarding your message alert, Goto Tools>Profiles>(the profile you usually use)>Options>Personalise. Now scroll down to Message Alert Tone and make sure you have a tone set.

Nice response cjlim, and the cost is great too. Why cant it be like that everywhere?!

But i think he has already stated he has set the tone and made sure that the settings were correct.
Even if the tone was not set, he would still get the message icon appear telling him he had 1 new message, it seems the phone isnt telling him about any messages at all.

Message tone definitely set. The only message icon that comes up is on the screen saver. I think I'll have to just bite the bullet and update the firmware.

As far as I know O2 ireland still doesn't support video calls. (Not that I really need them but it'd be nice for the few people I know that have 3g facilities)

Have you tried making a new profile altogether or editing one of the others and used that?

Re: Message Alert on n95 has mysteriously stopped!?!

Yip I tried the change profile settings thing. It's not that. Doesn't beep but also only informs me of a message on the screensaver, so no message icon on screen unless in screen saver mode.

Regarding firmware update, my woes just got worse! My cable in my appartment has mysteriously died. Am still trying to get NTL (the cable company) to come and check it out (and yes I have paid up to date!). Firmware updater needs internet connection and I can't use it on the work PCs due to restrictions on use.

Oh well, I'll EVENTUALLY get sorted :smileysad:

Re: Message Alert on n95 has mysteriously stopped!?!

Hi

The exact same thing has happened to me but with my N73, it very annoying as you have to check the inbox to see if there are any messages!

I am a complete beginner when it comes to any technology, but before I try that firmware suggestion, how do I do a reset like you tried originally???

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks

Re: Message Alert on n95 has mysteriously stopped!?!

A few months ago my friends N95 developed this fault, much to his annoyance, and nothing he did seemed to fix it. My N95 developed the EXACT same problem. this i took not to just be chance, the only similarity i found between our phones that was obvious was that we both had 2000+ text messages in our inboxes (his was 3500) after having emptied my inbox, and removed the battery without turning the phone off first, i found that once again my phone recieved messages and displayed the alerts. once having explained what to do to my friend, his phone once again displayed alerts when he recieved messages. however, im not sure that these conditions are the same with all of you. ill outline what i did again

Emptied the inbox in one go by marking all messages and deleting them

then without turning the phone off, i removed the battery
put the battery back into the phone and turn it back on again (hard reset or something)

anyway i really hope this helps, please let me know if it does.

Re: Message Alert on n95 has mysteriously stopped!?!

It appears that Inbox was getting choked and the phone did not know how to handle it. Deleting & removing the battery reset the error handler. I think even without deleting the messages and by just removing the battery it could have worked :-?

Re: Message Alert on n95 has mysteriously stopped!?!

i tried a hard reset first, (that is by removing the battery whilst the phone was still on) and found it did not work, but then again it may do for others, i really dont know. i just came across the solution to fixing my friends phone and my own, by pure coincidence.

Re: Message Alert on n95 has mysteriously stopped!?!

I tried this today and it worked!

Deleting all (over 2000) messages alone didn't fix it.

I had to take the battery off while the phone was on, and turn it on again to get it to work.
