dumm n97 mac user question:-)

hi, i'm new to the board..

have a very good question for nokia here...

what if a mac user wants to update to the new firmware? just to  resolve the "very minor bugs" which with you have sold this phone to me...? any suggestions? prbably not....

also i find it quite annoying to register and log in to every site on nokia i visit. be it ovi, my nokia, ovi store, nokia maps, or whatever... why not group everything together with one login.. i am sure it would also make it easier for you my dear finns!

ps: like the multimedia transfer, but also, as probably as hundreds of other users waiting for the isync plugin... speechless.... hope that one of the users here pops up with a working isync plugin before nokia does.... would be a story for the press...

greetings from a mac user who actually would like to stay a satdisfied nokia client.

Don't hold your breath too long..we've been waiting forever for Mac Suite. The keep saying it's on it's way but, I still haven't seen current status or any ECD either. Hell will freeze over before we see Mac Suite.

WOW!! what a joke! i have a £500 nokia phone, a mac running 10.4.11 PPC G4, i get a text message 'update software available for your phone' oh ok, should be easy enough go to web/SW updater, DL the update, unzip and install right? OH you HAVE to be in possession of a WINDOWS XP enabled PC!! What is going on? I thought the n97 was an attempt to shine away potential iPhone users? obviously, a large proportion of these people use MACS*

*(nokia - MAC is short for MACINTOSH).

btw, how long has this 'We'll have a MAC Suite running in xx months/millennia' been going on for ?

Us MAC users have feelings too dont you know...

I am a MAC* user with a Nokia n97 - oh dear

*Mac is short for Macintosh, a computer made by a company called Apple.

I agree with you 110% on this.  I've battled today - I've finally got a login for here, and my Ovi store login still works, but the MyNokia account is a complete shambles.  Why I need three I have no idea, although I do know that the MyNokia is localised by country and these discussion forums are run out of the UK - but hey, usability folks, usability!

Well, it would be great to have MacOS support but that said firmware updates are a little more complicated than just unzipping and transferring to the phone.

Ovi Maps is a totally different story but firmware updates will require a couple of USB drivers to access the phone in modes such as direct, which is necessary to perform the update.

The bottomline is always the perceived market share.

While this is a roundabout way of getting the tech specs, on this page http://www.maps.nokia.com/find-products/devices/nokia-n97/specifications

it says this:

Software Platform and User Interface
  • S60 5th edition
  • Active standby
  • Voice commands
  • FOTA (Firmware update Over The Air)
  • Automatic UI rotation
  • Software updates

FOTA is part of the N97 tech specs. So, while I appreciate it's a bit more complicated than bunging a map on a hard drive though a USB cable, if they couldn't do it - why'd they tell us they could?

OK, I must be missing something. How's FOTA the same as a USB firmware update? They're two separate mechanisms for firmware updating that don't use the same mechanics at this point.

FOTA works fine, the only issue is that Nokia seems to be very selective for some reason what updates that put up for FOTA for the various regions and operators.

This is an operatorless update. I have an undranded phone.

We have the opportunity for Firmware Over The Air updates, as the phone specs say we do; and we - as mac users - don't have any support for USB updates, because Nokia doesn't provide us with software to let us to it.

The obvious answer would be - provide the FOTA as described in the sell sheet.

We wouldn't come here cussing the company for their inability to service us (putting off other mac users from buying an otherwise wonderful phone).

Hell - put it in the OVI store!

Yes, I agree with you, FOTA would be the elegant solution.

Unfortunately, only Nokia can tell us why they decided not to release v11 for the N97 via FOTA.

Other updates for other phones have been released for FOTA, so we know that FOTA works.

Re: dumm n97 mac user question:-)

Absolutely.

Like I said in the other firmware thread - I've never had any problems with my N97. It's been a joy. (Sure we could have done with some documenation written by someone who had actually used the phone but...)

And I've used Nokias forever - so not having OSX support isn't new, but it's the frustration of not supporing FOTA is just galling.
