Successful Bluetooth Contacts Transfer - BMW iDrive

This is a cross post for a solution which worked for an E65 and 6110 Nokia in a 2008 BMW 320i with iDrive my girlfriend just bought. Note it'd therefore have the latest BMW firmware... but I'm not sure that's the issue. It seems to be Nok related... specifically, S60 based phones. A link to identify S60 phones is http://www.s60.com

Background:
- Both phones are 6 to 9 months old. My E65 had already received a firmware update some time ago.
- Neither phone would transfer contacts to the BMW. Both worked fine in all other ways.
- I tried many combinations of the "sync profile" method detailed previously and found it would not work.
- I tried to "send contacts" from the contact list to the BMW and that would not work.
- I tried to "data transfer" from the phone and found the BMW was not supported.
- I downloaded and installed the "Nokia 810 Contact Download Application for Nokia S60 3rd edition devices" from http://europe.nokia.com/A4143881 and found that didn't work.

Solution 1: SUCCESSFUL
- I updated the "Nokia Firmware Downloader" under the instructions of PC Suite which I already had installed.
- I updated the firmware on my E65 and enjoyed that it wiped my contacts.
- I deleted the existing pairing on the phone and car.
- I added one simple contact to the phone contacts list.
- I checked the installed "Contact Download Application" was running on the phone.
- I paired the phone and car and immediately saw a transfer of the contact I had entered.

So happy with my win, I set about repeating the process with the 6110 taking on board a few lessons, but also attempting to streamline for others.

Solution 2: FAILED***
- I deleted the existing pairing on the phone and car.
- I checked the installed "Contact Download Application" was running on the phone.
- I paired the phone and car and nothing seemed to happen, even after a few tries at reinitiating the Bluetooth connection by switching the car on and off.

I figured there was a requirement that the phone's firmware be updated, so started again.

Solution 3: SUCCESSFUL
- I set about doing backups using PC Suite and also the phone's system for saving content to the memory card.
- I updated the 6110 using PC Suite noting my girlfriend has better luck than I as all her contacts remained.
- I deleted the existing pairing on the phone and car.
- I checked the installed "Contact Download Application" was running on the phone (it had remained installed despite the firmware update).
- I paired the phone and car and nothing seemed to happen, even after a few tries at reinitiating the Bluetooth connection by switching the car on and off and on again.
- Whilst staring at the miserable POS for a while (and pointlessly poking with the "Contact Download Application") I noticed the transfer commence and all contacts come across from the phone to the car.
- I estimate it took 2 minutes for the transfer to commence with the 6110, and note it did not have a particularly large number of contacts. Once it stared it was damned quick.

I was, of course, totally chuffed and guaranteed an excellent breakfast.

I propose someone try the above method with an N95 to the letter to see if it works. Don't shortcut and make sure everything is the absolute latest revision. Hopefully all goes well and someone else can try the following.

SOLUTION 4: UNPROVEN
- Ignore firmware updating on phone.
- Delete the existing pairing on the phone and car.
- Download and install the "Nokia 810 Contact Download Application for Nokia S60 3rd edition devices" from http://europe.nokia.com/A4143881 .
- Check the installed "Contact Download Application" is running on the phone.
- Pair the phone and car then reinitiate the Bluetooth connection by switching the car on and off and on again.
- WAIT for the transfer to commence and all contacts to come across from the phone to the car.

I really hope this progresses some of the S60 operating system connectivity issues out there, and highlight that as of last night I was a total noob. It's all trial, error, analysis and patience!

Re: Successful Bluetooth Pairing - BMW iDrive

Hi,

can you help me? This is not a contact pairing issue.

TOPICS
1-In 2006 I got a BMW 530d SW, with i-drive
2-I normally used my nokia 6230i, paired with BMW bluetooth (working perfectly, even for the contacts)
3-I bought a new nokia N95.

ISSUE:
Nokia N95 is normally pairing with BMW bluetooth, but it automatically switchs off, then immediately switchs on every 2 minutes.
So, calls are almost totally impossible to manage.

Thanks and regards.

Re: Successful Bluetooth Pairing - BMW iDrive

When my E90 was paired to the BMW iDrive, it would drop calls (and the bluetooth link) as it tried to synch contacts. At this point, the pairing would only work on voice calls and contacts transfer would not. Same situation as your N95 problem by the sound ofit.

I suspect if you follow the full procedure of "Solution 3" above (ie: including updating your phone's firmware) you'll be on a winner.

Let us know if it works... or not.

Cheers,
Steve

Re: Successful Bluetooth Pairing - BMW iDrive

I got your useful suggestion.

I managed to unsynch contacts in my N95.

Now my bluetooth device works properly.

Thanks for your help!

Re: Successful Bluetooth Contacts Transfer - BMW iDrive

Hi there!

I have a Nokia N95 8GB with V20.0.016 and the Contacts Downloader for the 810 (S60 3rd Ed). My car is an Audi A4 with the phone preparation but I was not able to get the contacts to the car. I am only getting the "Please Wait" message from the car. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Re: Successful Bluetooth Pairing - BMW iDrive

I have followed the previous instructions (Version 3 including updating the firmware), but still cannot get the contacts to sync to my new BMW 3 Series i-drive.

It seemed a simple process, but I must be missing something - can you offer any other advice?

Thanks

Re: Successful Bluetooth Pairing - BMW iDrive

I have tried all the above too and still my e65 will not load contacts to my iDrive (520d, Jan 2007 car). Not giving up just yet though - just keep getting "please wait" on the iDrive and "Transferring Contacts on the e65"....

Re: Successful Bluetooth Contacts Transfer - BMW iDrive

Managed to download all contacts to my Audi! The first time... takes time! And when I say time for me it required at least 4 hours! I had to have the phone paired for 4 hours with the car’s BT. I was getting the “PLEASE WAIT” message too. Be patience people and it will download the contacts! (It will take the same time despite the number of contacts)

Re: Successful Bluetooth Contacts Transfer - BMW iDrive

Interesting - but 4 hours!!?? Did you go for a 4 hour drive or just leave the phone in the car with the ignition switched on?

Drove for 2 hours, left the key on for another 2! I don't know why it took it so long but since then it works fine.

Re: Successful Bluetooth Contacts Transfer - BMW Bluetooth

Steve many thanks for the explanation of how to download and use "Contact Download Application".

I have a June 2008 135i convertible and needed a phone with 3G capability.

I had a Nokia 6300 and the contact download worked just fine - but no 3G.

Our company sponsored E61 and E65 would not do the automatic contact transfer.

I did the "contact download application" activity described earlier on this thread. Got it running in background on the phone. Paired the phone to car. Waited ten minutes. Hey presto, the "contact transfer" notification comes up on the mobile phone and all contacts transferred. The E61 and E65 now work the same as the "supported" 6300.

(I didn't bother to do any phone firmware updates).

Hope this helps!

Hi,
I have a BMW 6 series and recently bought the new E66. I could not find any posting on bluetooth pairing problems with this model. It is the same classic issue with phonebook.
I installed Contact Download Application" and made sure it was running on the phone. I paired the phone and car and nothing worked even with one contact.
I had Sony Ericsson before and had no problem.

I would be very thankful for your help.

Re: Successful Bluetooth Contacts Transfer - BMW iDrive

I have an Audi A4 with phone preparation too and I cannot get it working. Pairing my N82 with the car is no problem, but no contacts will be transfered.
Did you do something special?
Before installing the application, I delete all previous paired devices, then install the application, reboot, start application, it starts bluetooth automatically, ignite the car, it makes new connection with my car and then the application says: "busy". When I push the contacts button on my steering wheel it says "busy" too and after about 30 seconds it says "button not in use". I can wait forever but nothing happens.

Help needed, because this is really annoying.

Re: Successful Bluetooth Contacts Transfer - BMW iDrive

I just can't understand why Nokia technical people do not try to step in and help. Why do we have jump from one forum to another and waste our time trying to solve a problem with their phones !!!

Re: Successful Bluetooth Contacts Transfer - BMW iDrive

Thank you Linwood,
I called on Nokia support and they diagnosed the problem, but unfortunately they did not provide the solution. The new E66 is running on 2.0 Bluetooth platform while my older phones are onm 1.2 so either I change my 6 series or the E66. I am sure you know my decision :-)

What I don't understand in this is why Nokia does not verify the solutions that might work. Then we, your customer, know what to do.

Re: Successful Bluetooth Contacts Transfer - BMW iDrive

Actually I suggested that to the gentleman I spoke to, he suggested I contact BMW to solve this problem !!! Nokia cannot roll back to an older blutooth version. WHY not have two versions that one can download!!!

We don't understand the point of view of Nokia. The next phone for me will definitely not be a Nokia. Yesterday I have tested the new iPhone in my car and everything functions perfect!
I don't like the attitude of Nokia!

Re: Successful Bluetooth Contacts Transfer - BMW iDrive

Ronnie, thanks. This is what I pointed out to Nokia support people. We need phones that go with our cars not the otherway round. The thing is I like the Nokia E66 and I think it is a fantastic business phone, yet I need to use it in my car. I am hoping these messages will get through and I am sure they will act, but it is a matter of time. The question is how much time do they need and how many customers will they lose.
I am also still hopeful that someone might find a solution.
Cheers
